Archaeology

Archaeology or archeology is the science that studies human cultures through the recovery and analysis of material remains and environmental data. Because archaeology's aim is to understand humankind, it is a humanistic endeavor.

Archaeologists are concerned with the study of methods used in the discipline. The tasks of surveying areas in order to find new sites, excavating sites in order to recover cultural remains, classification, analysis, and preservation are all important phases of the archaeological process.

In parts of Europe and the Old World, the discipline has its roots in antiquarianism and the study of Latin and Ancient Greek, and so has a natural affinity with the field of history. Italian historian Flavio Biondo (1392–1463), is recognized as one of the world’s first archaeologists. Modern archaeology has been improved to obtain as much data on the site being examined as possible.
