America

The Americas are the lands of the Western hemisphere, consisting of the continents of North America and South America with their associated islands and regions. The Americas cover 8.3% of the Earth's total surface area and about about 900 million people. The term “America” may be ambiguous, as it is commonly used to refer to the United States of America.

North America

North America is the northern continent of America, situated in the northern hemisphere. It is bordered on the north by the Arctic Ocean, on the east by the North Atlantic Ocean, on the southeast by the Caribbean Sea, and on the west by the North Pacific Ocean.

North America covers an area of about 24,709,000 square kilometers (9,540,000 square miles), and its population is estimated at nearly 529 million people.

South America

South America is the southern continent of the Americas, situated mostly in the Southern Hemisphere. It is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean and on the north and east by the Atlantic Ocean; North America and the Caribbean Sea lie to the northwest.

South America has an area of 17,840,000 square kilometers (6,890,000 sq mi), and its population is estimated at more than 371,090,000.
