A monument is a type of structure either explicitly created to commemorate a person or an important event or symbol. Older cities have monuments placed at locations that are already important or are sometimes redesigned to focus on one, and their purpose is very often to impress or awe. The word "monumental" is used in reference to something of great size and power.
Monuments are also often designed to convey historical or political information, sometimes used to educate the populace about important events or figures from the past
Monuments are often the most durable and famous symbols of ancient civilizations, such as Egyptian Pyramids or the Greek Parthenon
